Panchmel Dal is the protein rich Rajasthani Dal. Here, Panch means 5 and mel means mix. One of the most popular dals of Rajasthan,  Panchmel is delicious and nutritious.Traditionally, 5 dals are used in praparation and hence the name -”Panch mel” dal. The dal is thick and can be had with Roti/Chapati,Paratha or jeera rice. Learn how to make panchmel dal by following this easy Panchmel dal recipe. 

 

Ingredients for making Panchmel dal 

  • 50 gm split green gram lentil (moong ki dhuli dal)
  • 50 gm arhar dal
  • 50 gm horse beans (chane ki dal)
  • 50 gm urad ki dhuli dal
  • 4 cup water
  • a pinch asafoetida (hing)
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
  • 1/2 tsp spice blend (garam masala)
  • 1 tsp red chilly powder (lal mirch)
  • 1 tsp coriander powder (dhania)
  • 1 lemon (nimbu)
  • 2 tbsp clarified butter (ghee)
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp chopped coriander leaves for garnishing 

 

How to prepare panchmel dal

  1. Mix all dals, Clean and wash them properly.
  2. Soak them for 30 minutes in water.
  3. Take a pressure cooker; add dals, 4cup water, spice blend, turmeric powder and salt in it, pressure cook for 2 whistles, then simmer for 10 minute. Then remove it from the flame.
  4. Heat butter in a pan, add cumin seeds in it, let them splutters then add asafetida, red chilly powder and coriander powder in it and mix it well.
  5. Pour this butter mixture on the daal.
  6. Garnished panchmel dal with the coriander leaves.
  7. Add lemon juice and Serve hot with roti/chapatti or rice.
