Masala Dal

Masala dal is yet another example of spicy and tangy Indian dish. Masala dal is a departure from the usual plain dal. It goes well with roti, vegetables and raita. Here, we are providing you an easy and quick recipe of spicy dal i.e. masala dal. Learn how to prepare masala daal by following this easy recipe.

 

 Ingredients for making Masala Dal 

  • 1 cup Masoor Dal (Split Red Lentil)
  • 4 Cup water
  • 1 meduim sized sliced Onion  
  • 2 chopped Tomato
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seed
  • 3-4 slit Green Chilli
  • 1/2 cup grated Coconut
  • 1 tbsp chopped Coriander Leaves
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • Salt to taste 

 

 

Method to prepare Masala Dal 

  1. First of all clean and wash the daal properly until water is clear.
  2. Soak the dal in water for 30 minutes, and drain excess water. Keep daal aside.
  3. Take the grated coconut and little water; grind it with the help of grinder to make a smooth paste of it. Keep it aside.
  4. Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seed, and wait till they splutter, Add tomatoes, green chilies in it. Wait till tomatoes turn soft. Now add the coconut paste in it. Mix thoroughly.
  5. Again heat oil in pan, add sliced onions in it, and fry till they turn golden brown. Keep aside.
  6. Now take a cooker, put dal and sufficient water in it, and then add turmeric powder and salt to the dal. Pressure cook all the material till dal gets soft.
  7. Remove the lid of the cooker and add the above prepared frying material to the dal, cook for 5 minutes over low flame.
  8. Garnish the dal with the fried onions and the chopped coriander leaves.
  9.  Serve hot with chapattis and rice.
