Chicken Chettinad

Chicken Chettinad is a spicy treat cooked in the typical Tamil Nadu (Chettinad) style. Chicken Chettinad is quite popular amongthe non-veg lovers and tastes good with roti, appam and steamed rice. Here is an easy to make Chicken Chettinad curry recipe to help you preparethe delicious dish.
Ingredients for preparing Chicken Chettinad:
- 10 medium sized pieces (about 1000 grams) of chicken
- 8 curry leaves (big)
- 2 large tomatoes chopped
- 2 medium onion(s) chopped
- 1 teaspoon each of red chilli and turmeric powders
- 2.5 teaspoons lemon juice
- 2.5 cup(s) water
- 2.5 tablespoon(s) oil
- Finely chopped coriander leaves for garnishing
- Salt to taste
For the Paste
- 2 teaspoon poppy seeds (khus khus)
- 6-7 whole red chillies
- 1 teaspoon of coriander, cumin & fennel seeds
- 6 tablespoons grated coconut (optional)
- 2 cloves and green cardamoms each
- 2 teaspoons each of chopped ginger and garlic
- 1″ piece cinnamon
How to prepare Chicken Chettinad:
- Take little oil in pan, heat it and fry all the ingredients at medium flame for the paste except ginger and garlic. Let it cool and then grind the whole material to a paste along with ginger and garlic.
- Now, heat oil in a heavy-bottomed pan on medium flame till it becomes hot and fry the chopped onions till they turn golden brown.
- Add the curry leaves, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and the paste and fry for some time.
- Take the chopped tomatoes and fry for about 2.5 minutes or till the oil starts leaving the sides of the pan.
- Add the chicken pieces and mix them well and cook on medium flame for about 5-7 minutes.
- Put the lemon juice and water into the pan and add salt to taste and mix the ingredients well.
- Cover the pan and cook on low flame for about 20-22 minutes or till the chicken gets fully tender.
- Finally, garnish Chicken Chettinad with finely chopped coriander leaves.
