Usal is a nutritious and popular Maharashtrian Dish. Usal is a spicy curry prepared using sprouted pulses and is served topped with yogurt and spicy chivda. This spicy curry is served with bread is called Misal Pav. Traditionally usal is made with sprouted math beans, but I make it with a variety of pulses. Pav in Marathi means bread, which has been borrowed from Portuguese pao. Here is an easy recipe to help you learn how to make usal pav.
Ingredients for making Usal Pav:
- 1 cup Green Peas
- 6-8 Pavs
- ½ tsp Garam Masala
- ¼ tsp crushed Cumin Seeds
- 1 Lemon Juice
- 2 tblsp Oil
- salt to taste
Make Paste:
- 1 small bunch fresh Coriander
- 8-10 Green Chilies
- ½ cup fresh grated Coconut
For Garnish:
- Chopped onions
- Fine Sev
- Lemon Quarters
How to make Usal Pav:
- First of all in heavy bottom vessel and heat oil in it.
- Then make the paste of coriander, green chilies and grated coconut.
- Then stir fry this paste in the oil for 2 minutes.
- Now add 3 cups water and bring to a boil.
- Then add all the other ingredients, stir and boil.
- Then simmer for 15-20 minutes with stirring occasionally.
- Then cook till oil separates and floats on top and peas get soft.
- Now check the seasoning.
- To garnish sprinkle chopped onions, pieces of lemon and sev.
- Now serve hot with bread or pav.
